  Bombing of Guernica
The bombing of Guernica (Gernika is the Basque name) was an aerial attack on April 26, 1937, 70 years ago during the Spanish Civil War. The raid resulted in widespread destruction and civilian death in the Republican held town of Guernica, Basque Country.


Bombing of Gernika - Tagzania

The attack was carried by planes of the German Luftwaffe "Condor Legion" and subordinate Italian Fascists from the Corpo Truppe Volontarie expeditionary force organized as Aviazione Legionaria. They took part in the Spanish war on the side of the rebel nationalists, led by General Francisco Franco.

The bombing captured the eye of the international press mainly by a report by journalist George Steer, who wrote for The Times of London.
